A new home, a new birthday and a new year. All in just over 365 days.
That’s how long a triple-death investigation involving three NFL fans in Kansas City has remained open with no official cause or manner of death released to the public, police and the prosecutor’s office handling the case confirmed to USA TODAY Tuesday.
Aside from police investigators, a medical examiner’s office and a small-town district attorney, no one knows what happened to long-time high school friends Ricky Johnson, 38, David Harrington, 37, and Clayton McGeeney, 36. The trio was found dead outside a friend’s Missouri home Jan. 9, 2024 − two days after the Kansas City Police Department said they met to watch the Kansas City Chiefs regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.
At the time, the home where the men were found was rented by a then 38-year-old scientist who lived alone and worked remotely for a New York hospital, the man’s Kansas City-based lawyer, John Picerno said. USA TODAY is not naming the man who lives in the home where the bodies were found because he has not been charged with a crime.
“We do not know why the investigation has taken so long or why they will not publicly announce that (my client) is not a suspect,” Picerno, who said he also does not know how the men died, told USA TODAY Tuesday. “They (police and prosecutors) are refusing to comment. It’s heartbreaking for all involved. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the friends and families of the victims.”
When will the mysterious circumstances around their death be answered? Here’s what USA TODAY had learned as of Tuesday, a little over a year after the men’s deaths.
What we know happened so far
On the night of the game, Jan. 7, temperatures dipped to 29 degrees, the National Weather Service reported. Some 48 hours later, police reported, officers received a call from McGeeney’s fiancée who said she visited the home after not hearing from him and, when no one answered the door, broke inside and found a dead body out back. She called 911, police said.
When officers arrived, they also found two other men dead in the backyard.
There were no obvious signs of foul play “observed at or near the crime scene,” according to police who have not released how long they suspect the men had been dead or how they possibly died.
“Investigators and prosecutor’s remain in touch and investigators have continued to communicate their investigative findings during the entirety of this process,” Gonzalez said. “We have remained in contact with our detectives and asked to be updated as investigative updates become available. We were told they are hopeful to have some updates in the coming weeks.”
